Chapter 9: What Nate Kept

Nate's POV

The general manager's office smelled of burnt coffee.

I stood in front of his desk with my gloves still in my hand.

Travis sat in the leather chair by the window, one ankle on his knee. He had changed into a clean shirt, and he looked bored.

"Sit down, Nate," the GM said.

"I'll stand."

He slid a single page across the desk.

"The team is issuing a clarification. You're going to sign it."

I read the first paragraph.

Nate Corrigan regrets any confusion caused by his remarks at media day. He did not witness anything inappropriate between Captain Holloway and any individual. He is concerned about Mrs. Holloway's wellbeing and hopes she receives the support she needs.

My jaw tightened.

"Concerned about her wellbeing."

"It's standard language," the GM said.

"It says I saw nothing."

"You were in a parking garage at night," Travis said from the window, easy and pleasant. "Maybe you saw two friends talking. Memory is funny."

I looked at him.

For eight seasons I had stood in the net while he skated in front of me.

I had believed him when he told me the team was family.

"Sign it," the GM said, "and we move on. Don't, and your contract has a conduct clause that I'm very happy to use. Winnipeg has already called."

"Winnipeg," I said.

"They've always liked you."

Travis finally smiled.

"You can still play for a living, Nate. All you have to do is forget one night."

The pen lay on the desk.
