Chapter 24: Fire
We were in the truck in four minutes.
I had his sweatshirt on inside out, Ida's jeans and no shoes.
The Coast Guard station sat on the harbor downtown, behind a chain-link fence.
Two fire trucks stood in the lot with their lights going.
A long metal shed at the back had its roof peeled open.
The captain stood at the fence in his rain jacket with soot on his face.
He didn't look surprised to see us.
"Three fifty this morning," he said. "Somebody cut the fence behind the shed and poured gasoline under the door."
"The door," Jasper said. "Our door."
"Steel doesn't burn. It's still in there."
He looked at the smoke.
"But the tags were brass. Brass melts. Every one of them is a puddle on the floor."
I thought of the green tags coming clean under his thumb.
STODDARD MARITIME. And a number.
"So now it's just a chained door," I said.
"It's a chained door that sat in a fire somebody set. Any lawyer in this state says my evidence was tampered with. And he'd be right."
Jasper walked three steps away and stopped with both hands on his head.
