Chapter 19: The Back Door
"There's a door at the back of the kitchen garden," I said. "Behind the compost heap."
Matvei stared at me.
We stood in the road just outside the locked gate.
The Madam's laugh was still ringing off the wall.
"It's how I got out," I said. "It's barely wide enough for a woman. The latch is on the inside."
"Then someone inside has to open it."
"The maid will." I turned. "Won't you?"
The maid who had testified stood in the road with her apron over her mouth.
She nodded.
"I'll lead you to the cellars," she said. "I know the keys."
"No," Matvei said. "Sorrel, no."
"You said every plan."
"I did not mean you walking into a house full of crossbows."
"You also said I'd decide what to do with my freedom." I put a hand on his chest. "This is what I'm doing with it."
His jaw worked.
"You're carrying our child."
"And you're carrying a silver wound. You'll break the front gate, and every man on that wall will look at you, and while they look I'll be in the cellar." I held his eyes. "That's the plan. Tell me what's wrong with it."
"Everything," Matvei said. "It's a good plan."
He bent and kissed me once, hard, in front of a hundred wolves.
"Anselm goes with you," he said.
"I'll take him."
"Then I'll see you inside."
He stripped off his coat and handed it to a guard.
His wolf came out of him in a rush of bone and black fur, and the biggest wolf I had ever seen lowered his head at the iron bars.
I did not wait to watch.
We ran.
