Chapter 20: No, Madam

Matvei's POV

I had never in my life stopped a charge for anyone.

I stopped for the boy.

The yard went silent around me. My wolf stood in the mud with its hackles up and its teeth bare, and every muscle in my body was trying to cross the stone yard in one jump.

I could not do it. The knife was an inch from his throat.

I made myself shift.

It hurt more than it had ever hurt. The silver in my shoulder opened like a mouth.

A guard threw a cloak at me, and I put it on and walked forward, naked under it, with my hands open.

"Madam," I said.

"Alpha." She was still smiling. "Good of you to come in."

"Put down the knife."

"Presently. First, our terms."

I did not look at the boy.

I knew that if I looked at him, I would stop being able to think.

"Say them."

"Your wolves leave my house. You withdraw your claim before the lords, and the girl returns to my care with her child. The boy stays here, as my ward." Her hand did not shake. "And the writ is mine, as I said it would be."

"No."

The blade pressed closer.

A thin red line showed on the child's skin.

"Matvei," Sorrel said.

She had come up beside me without a sound.

Her hair was loose and her hands were empty, and she looked at me for one second with her hazel eyes wide and steady.

I understood her.

I stepped back and let her go.

"Tobin," she said.

She did not look at the Madam. She looked up at the boy, and she said his name softly.

"My name is Sorrel. I'm your mother's sister."
