Chapter 24: Kellogg and Rock Road
Cedar Lane at six on Sunday smelled of roast chicken, wet wool and candle wax.
Every chair in the house had been pulled up to the dining table.
The extra leaf had come out of the hall closet, where it had waited four years.
Loyd sat at the head in a cardigan, with a pillow tied to his chair and the nurse glaring at him from the doorway.
"Eat slowly," she said.
"I eat the way I like."
"You'll eat the way I like or I'll tell the surgeon."
He ate slowly.
The crew filled the sofa and the stairs and the kitchen counter.
The old assembler sat by his wife, whose chair had been rolled to the head of the table.
She wore a red scarf and held court.
The young woman with the nose ring had brought three pies.
The man in the Royals cap had brought his guitar and was not allowed to play it yet.
Dinah sat on my left with her braid pinned up for the first time since I'd known her.
On my right sat the boy.
He wore the green coat to the table.
Nobody had asked him to take it off, and the caseworker, beside him, had her hand an inch from his shoulder, not touching.
He was watching Loyd, with his chin down and his eyes up.
"Do you like chicken?" Loyd said to him.
