Chapter 14: Letters

Fabien found him at the end of the dock at sundown, with his knees pulled up and a black notebook in his lap.

Eleven others lay in a stack beside him.

The bayou was flat and copper under the last light.

Fabien had sung to crowds of forty thousand without a tremor in his voice.

He stood on the planks now and could not make himself take a step.

"Go away," Emile said, without turning.

"Gaston asked me to."

"Then Gaston can come himself."

"He can't," Fabien said. "He's walked the fence line six times. He is afraid you will tell him to leave."

Emile did not answer.

Fabien sat down on the boards, an arm's length away, and looked at the water.

His brothers thought he was the easy one.

The golden one, the smiling one, the voice.

They did not know that he was the one who had written the most.

Four hundred and six pages, in a stack of black notebooks, to a man who had never read a word.

"I read the one for *Cold Side of Town*," Emile said at last. "It was yours."

"Yes," Fabien said.

"You wrote that my second verse was the first time you understood your own father."

"Yes," Fabien said again.

"I wrote that verse about a man who left a diner without paying," Emile said.
