Chapter 15: Good Friday
Ledoux called on Good Friday, at ten at night.
Emile took the call on the back porch, in the dark, with the screen door shut.
He had told Gaston where he was going.
He had told all of them.
Rule three was a good rule, and he had begun to like keeping it.
"Emile," Ledoux said. "Happy Easter, my boy."
"It's Friday."
"Early greeting. I like to be ahead."
Papers rustled.
"I have a photograph. A very good photograph. My man in the oaks took it with a long lens."
Emile's mouth went dry.
"Of what?" Emile said.
"A large red wolf, standing over a boy in a yard. The wolf has gold eyes. The boy is you."
There was a pause.
"A network is very interested. They broadcast the Jazz Festival live on Easter Sunday, and the Theriot Brothers close the show."
"You wouldn't," Emile said.
"I would, and I will. Unless you sign the whole catalogue over to my company, tonight, and vanish."
Ledoux sounded pleased.
"Choose, Emile. Thirty-eight songs, or four wolves on camera."
The line went dead.
