Chapter 22: The Fifth Verse

Sylvain read the letter standing at the desk, with the lamp behind him and his hands shaking.

*Dear Emile.*

*I used to write Dear Marais, but I do not want to anymore.*

*You are not a ghost. You are the one who laughs at my jokes and makes me eat.*

*I have a scar on my shoulder from a fight when I was fourteen. I have never shown it to anyone.*

*I want you to be the first.*

He lowered the paper.

His freckled face was dark red.

"That's all," he said. "That's the whole letter."

"Show me," Emile said.

Sylvain put the paper down.

He took off his shirt, turned, and showed him a long white seam across the top of his left shoulder.

Emile crossed the room and pressed his lips to it.

Sylvain's whole body shuddered.

"Nobody's ever," Sylvain began.

"I know," Emile said.

"You're not supposed to be so gentle with me. I'm the loud one."

"I know that too," Emile said.

Emile kissed the scar again, slowly, and then the nape of his neck, and the knobs of his spine, one by one.
