Chapter 14: The Check

Ewan woke up while I was still staring at it.

He didn't ask what was wrong.

He took the phone out of my hand, read the headline, and handed it back.

"Ewan," he said.

"What?"

"Your rule. First thing, before hello."

I laughed, and it came out shaky.

"That's Whit," I said. "He's telling us he isn't waiting until Friday."

"He's telling us the price goes up." Ewan was already reaching for his watch. "Stay here today. Let me handle it."

"I have a shift at two."

"Rosalind."

"I have a shift at two, and a man who owes me money was supposed to walk into my store this morning with a check."

I got out of his bed in nothing and went to find my dress.

"He won't come," Ewan said.

"I know. That's why I'm going to him."

There were six reporters on the sidewalk outside the bookstore when I got there.

One of them had a camera on his shoulder.

"Mrs. Chisholm! Mrs. Chisholm, is it true you're married to more than one man?"

"Is Wyatt Chisholm a twin?"

"Did you know before the wedding?"

I unlocked the shop door with my own key and went in without a word.
