Chapter 16: Her Condo

Cian got me to Summerlin in ten minutes and didn't stop at a single yellow light.

I was out of the car before it stopped rolling.

Bram was on the front step of the condo with his hand already raised to knock.

Not a fist.

Just a flat, heavy hand, about to come down on Whit's door hard enough to wake the street.

"Bram."

He didn't turn. "Go back to the car."

"Bram," I said again, and put myself between him and the door, which was getting to be a habit.

"Whatever you do in there, they put on a forty-foot screen Saturday. With your face. Which is everybody's face."

"I wasn't going to hit him."

"Then why are you here?"

"To tell him the truth." His jaw worked. "Nobody's ever been able to stand it. I thought I'd try it on him."

I looked up at him.

His eyes were red at the rims, and I didn't think it was the desert wind.

"Then we tell it together," I said, and knocked.

Whit opened the door in sweatpants with a beer in his hand.

He saw me.

Then he saw Bram over my head, and the beer stopped halfway to his mouth.

"Bram," said Bram.

Whit blinked. "What?"

"My name. I'm the one you photographed by the cash room. Thought you should know who you're blackmailing."

"Who is it, babe?"

His fiancee came down the hall behind him, barefoot, in a silk robe, a glass of white wine in her hand.

She stopped when she saw me.

Behind her I could see the kitchen.

Butter yellow.

Two coats, one Sunday last spring, while Whit watched golf on the couch and called it "our place."

"You," she said to me.

"Me," I said. "I'm sorry about the hour. I painted your kitchen."

She looked over her shoulder at the yellow walls, and then back at me.

"He said a decorator did it."

"I'm a decorator now, I guess."

"Roz, get off my property," Whit said.

"You'll want to hear the rest first," I said, and looked past him at her.

"Ask him what he wants from the Chisholm family by Friday."

She looked at Whit.

"Seven figures," said Bram.

The wineglass tilted in her hand.

"That's insane," Whit said. "Babe, she's insane, she's been stalking me for a week."
