Chapter 12: Testimony
On Wednesday night Isaiah was waiting at the church door in his gray suit with his hat in his hand.
He did not say anything.
He put his palm flat against the small of my back, in front of three people on the steps.
He left it there for the length of one breath.
Then he took it away and went in ahead of me.
I sat in the back pew, where he had told me to.
I could see the whole room from there.
The lights were on in the front half of the sanctuary.
Sixty people sat in the first ten pews with their programs and their fans.
The communion table stood under its white cloth.
The four deacons sat in the front pew in a row, with their hats on their knees.
None of them looked around.
The pastor read a psalm.
He asked for the sick and the shut-in and the grieving, and he asked who had a testimony to share with the church.
