Chapter 19: Eye to Eye

Abner's hallway was lined with thirty-four years of team photographs, and I knelt on the runner under the last one and said it.

"I came home to ruin you."

He stood over me with his arms folded, in his Saturday shirt and his whistle-less neck.

"Go on," he said.

"I walked into that bank lot to ruin you. I put my teeth in your hand because I wanted you to remember it."

My voice held.

"I climbed on you in your gym, and I knew every minute what I was doing."

My voice held.

"I meant to stand up at Easter and tell the whole church that Coach Toliver took a dead man's daughter on his bleachers."

I swallowed.

"I used you. I'm sorry."

"Look at me."

I looked up.

"Now I say it back," Abner said.

His face was stern, and his eyes were wet.

"You came to my gym with a plan. You let me think the parking lot was an accident."

His mouth worked.

"You let me tell you I had never asked a soul to stay."

His mouth worked.

"Thirty-four years I gave that to no one. I gave it to you on a bleacher in the dark."

He stopped, and started again.

"You were writing it down to hold it up in front of my church."

"Yes," I said.

"I do not forgive you, young lady."

"I know," I said.

"I want you to hear me say it."

"I heard you," I said.

"Get up."

I got up.

He took me by both wrists and turned me around and put my palms flat on the wall, among the faces of all those boys.

"Higher," he said.

I lifted them.

He caught my wrists in one huge hand and pinned them against the plaster above my head.

His other hand pushed my skirt up over my hips.

I felt him tug at my underwear, and a seam let go.

"Abner."

"You do not say a word until I tell you."

He tore the lace off me and dropped it on the runner.

His boots shoved my feet apart.

I heard his belt, and his zipper, and the sound of his breath through his teeth.

He pushed into me standing, from behind, in one hard thrust that lifted me onto my toes.
