Four Men Crept Into My Childhood Room, So I Kept My Eyes Shut novel · Chapter 7 of 24

Chapter 7: The Spur

On Friday night the Spur was packed, and Brock walked in like he owned it.

I was at the end of the bar with a beer, and Lyle was pouring behind it, and half of Pike Hollow was shouting over a ball game.

Brock climbed onto a stool and rapped his knuckles on the wood.

"Bethany," he said, loud. "A word."

The room quieted.

"Say it here," I said.

"Fine." He turned to face the crowd. "Folks, I'm sorry to do this in public. Bethany has been grieving, and four men she grew up with have taken advantage of her."

Lyle set down a glass very slowly.

"They live in her house," Brock said. "They have talked her out of selling. They come into her room at night."

I went cold from my scalp to my heels.

"I have a witness," Brock went on, and he waved a hand toward the door, where a man in a golf shirt stood with a camera on his phone. "Someone saw a light at her window every night."

"Seen what?" said an old woman at the end of the bar.

"I'd rather not say in front of ladies."

"I'm a lady," she said. "Say it."

Brock hesitated.

He had not planned for that.

I got off my stool.

My hands were shaking, so I put them flat on the bar.

"Brock," I said. "I'll tell you what you saw. You saw my father's farm, which he left to five of us in equal shares. You saw four men who've been sleeping under that roof since they were sixteen, because my father gave them a home."

I pulled the folded will out of my back pocket and put it on the bar.
