Chapter 5: Flowers and a Form
I went down alone.
Dot wanted to come, and Keir wanted to come, and I told them both to stay where they were.
If I was going to say no to my husband, I wanted to do it with nobody holding my coat.
The street was gray and cold, and the roses in Stanton's hand were wrapped in plastic with a price sticker still on them.
"Hey, babe," he said.
His eyes were red. He looked like he had been up all night, though it was only noon.
"You didn't have to come here," I said.
"I did." He held out the flowers. "Mom's sorry. In her way. She took the video down."
I did not take the flowers.
"She took it down after a million people saw it," I said.
"Freya."
"I'm not mad about the video, Stanton. I'm mad that you stood behind her chair."
His mouth worked.
"I know," he said. "I know. I should have said something. I froze."
"You freeze every time."
"I'm trying to fix it." He lowered his voice. "That's why I'm here. Can I show you something? It's nothing big."
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
He smoothed it against the roof of a parked car.
At the top, in small print, it said: *Change of Primary Account Holder.*
I read the words twice.
The bank's logo was in the corner, the same one that was on the red stamps in Dot's shoebox.
"What is this?"
"It's a formality." He tapped the signature line, the one with a little yellow flag already stuck beside it. "The bank keeps sending letters to the house, and Mom's tired of them. She's the one who handles everything anyway. You just sign here, and it all goes through her, and the letters stop."
