Chapter 24: Cold Nights

The cottage was too full and too quiet at the same time.

Jisung slept in the spare room with Hyunjin curled behind him, and neither had spoken since supper.

Minho sat at her kitchen table with the pages spread out and a pot of coffee, reading page nine over and over.

Felix had gone up the cliff path at ten o'clock without a coat.

He came back at midnight, soaked to the skin, with his long hair plastered to his neck.

Missy was waiting on the stairs in her robe.

"Is he alive?" she said.

"He's alive. He won't eat."

"What did he say?"

Felix leaned against the wall and let the water run off him.

"I told him he was an idiot. He agreed. I told him he should have trusted you, and he agreed with that too."

"That sounds like him."

"Then I asked him why he never told you. And he said."

He stopped.

"Say it," said Missy.

"He said you ended it in your kitchen, the night the fan thread went up. He asked you to stay. Just once, he said. He stood there and you said nothing, and you didn't come after him."

"I know."

"He said he's never stood in a room like that in his life, and he'd rather pay seven years than stand there again."

Missy sat down on the stair.

"That's why he decided alone. So he'd never be the one left standing there."

"Yes."

"God, we're a pair."

"You're not a pair, you're a pile," Felix said gently. "There are five of you."

She laughed, and it caught halfway into something else.

He crouched in front of her on the step, dripping onto the floorboards, and took her hands.

"Missy. Tell me what you need."

Nobody had asked her that in four years and meant it.

"I need to be held," she said. "In my own bed. On my side. And I need you to not make me talk."

"Done."

She led him upstairs.

In the bedroom she turned on the lamp, because for once she wanted to see.

Her husband's side lay smooth and untouched.
