Chapter 37: Not Countersigned

The meeting was held in the Wick, because the chairman would not wait for anyone to fly.

By two o'clock the manager's laptop sat on the counter, propped against the till, and the regulars had pulled every chair in the café into a half circle.

Nobody had invited them.

The retired teacher sat in the front with her cardigan buttoned wrong and a thermos of tea.

"I'm here as a witness," she told Missy. "In case anyone tries to get you to sign something."

"Nobody is going to get me to sign anything," said Missy.

"Good. I brought a pen anyway. A heavy one."

The manager opened the call, and the screen filled with a long table in Seoul and a man at the head of it.

He was in his sixties, with white hair and a grey suit, and he did not smile.

"Chan," he said, in Korean, and then in careful English for the room. "You have caused me a very loud morning."

"Yes, sir," said Chan.

Chan stood at the counter with the other three beside him and Minho at his shoulder, and Missy stood a step behind, where she could see his hands.

They were shaking, so he put them flat on the wood.

"The renewal you signed is on the table," said the chairman. "Seven years, and your solo contract with it. You will want to explain why you came to my company to give yourself away."

"I won't explain," said Chan. "I'm taking it back."

A murmur ran through the chairs.

"The renewal needs two things to stand," Chan said. "Your countersignature, and a waiver from each of the other three. They refused. I'm asking you not to sign."

"And if I sign?"

"Then I'll go to court and tell a judge you took it from a man who hadn't slept in three days."

Felix coughed into his fist, and it sounded a lot like a laugh.

The chairman looked down the table at his own people.

"Four million views," he said, to nobody. "In four hours."

"Six, sir," said the manager from behind the laptop. "As of a minute ago."
