Chapter 16: What He Signed

Kieran's POV

I left before dawn, with Nessa asleep and my back stuck to my shirt.

The Council house stood at the crossroads where six packs' roads met, a long stone hall with no flag on it.

The elder was waiting at the door with her cane and her grey shawl.

"You walk like a man with a bad back," she said.

"Three strikes of silver, minus one."

"I heard." She turned and went in. "The girl took the third. I heard that too."

She sat at the head of a plain table and pointed me to a chair. Two clerks sat at the foot with their pens up.

"You have asked to petition," she said. "Petition."

I laid three papers on the table.

"One. I want my name struck from clause nine of the Hollow Creek treaty, in the Council's own book, in blood, so that nobody can ever say I held her land through her."

"You struck it already."

"On my copy. Hollow Creek has the copy that says otherwise, and they will wave it." I pushed the second paper across. "Two. No guardianship of the Hollow Creek land, to anyone, while Elin's daughter lives. The land is hers alone."

The elder read it twice.

"She hasn't asked for this."

"No."

"She doesn't know you're here."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because she'd tell me to wait," I said. "She'd want to do it herself. In a few weeks she probably can. Right now her father's dying in a locked room, and her brother has silver shot and a signature to get."

The elder tapped the cane once on the floor.
