Chapter 9: The Black Mark

Dad was in the room before Dorian had finished speaking.

He didn't knock.

He stood in the doorway with Mum behind him, and he looked at the cuff on the floor, and at the two marks glowing in the firelight.

"I told you," he said to nobody. "I told myself it would never matter."

"Lucian," Dorian said.

"Lord Wray."

"You told my father's court that your daughter was dead."

Dad closed his eyes.

"Say it to her," Dorian said, very quietly. "Not me."

I picked the cuff off the floor and held it in my fist.

"I've worn this since I was a baby," I said. "You told me it was for my skin. You told me hybrids burn in sunlight if the mark's not covered."

"I did."

"That was a lie."

"It was a lie," Dad said. "It was the only one I ever told you, until two nights ago."

Mum sat down on the edge of the bed.

She had her hands folded very tightly in her lap, and she wasn't looking at either of us.

"Tell her all of it," she said. "You promised me you would."

Dad opened his eyes.

"A hybrid has two mates," he said. "One for the wolf, one for the vampire. Almost nobody remembers it, because almost nobody has been born hybrid in two hundred years. The Goddess marks the wolf mate when you're eighteen. The other mark comes at birth."

"Because vampires don't wait," Dorian said.

"Because vampires don't wait." Dad looked at his own wrist, then at mine. "The night you were born, Morwenna, the black mark came up on your arm, and in the same hour I felt it on the whole Court. Every vampire lord on the moor knew a mate had been born, and not one of them knew who. The old lord, Wray's father, sent riders to every house with a newborn."
