Chapter 11: Heard

By morning, Heard had sold two hundred thousand reveals.

Kath tracked them from her door desk.

By noon the first stories were in the Hush Test comments.

A nurse wrote that her ex-husband had paid twenty-nine ninety-nine and sent the result to her new boyfriend.

A man wrote that his brother-in-law had found out and read it out loud over the grill at a barbecue.

A teacher had listed a coworker and found the screenshot taped to the staff room fridge.

I read them at my door desk with my coffee going cold.

Jem read them over my shoulder and didn't say anything.

He put his hand on the back of my chair and kept it there.

At two, Kath swore and turned her laptop around.

"This one," she said. "Read this one."

It was a video, posted from a car in a parking lot.

A woman of about thirty-five sat behind the wheel in a safety vest, with her hair in a tight braid.

She wasn't crying.

She looked past crying.

"I work at the Port of Tacoma," she said to the camera. "Shipping office. Nine years."

She held up her phone to show a group chat.

"My shift supervisor bought a Heard reveal last night. Twenty-nine ninety-nine. He found out it was me."

She scrolled.

The supervisor had posted the reveal screenshot into the crew's group chat at six in the morning.

Under it, he'd typed: "Who wants to tell her I'm out of her league?"

Under that were forty laughing faces.

"This morning I got moved to nights," she said. "So it's less awkward for him."
