Chapter 29: Asking Pete
Jem looked at my mother for a long moment.
"Pam," he said. "Pete's my dad."
"I know who he is. I married him."
"So I'd be asking my own father if I can marry..."
He stopped.
He'd never said the word out loud.
Neither had I.
The shop got very quiet around us.
The apprentice stopped stacking chairs.
"Lindy's father left when she was two," my mother said. "He never asked anybody for anything in his life. Pete's the one who drove to Boston for her graduation in a car with no heat."
I hadn't known that was why the car had no heat.
"He'd want to be asked," my mother said. "So ask him."
She picked up her plate and walked away.
Jem and I sat there with our roast.
"And who do I ask?" I called after her.
"Me," she said, without turning around. "Obviously."
Christmas was at the house in Shoreline.
It snowed an inch at noon, which in Seattle means the city shuts down and everybody acts.
Kath came, with a tin of cookies and the privacy group's reviewer, who'd been introduced to everyone as "my plus one" and nothing else.
