Chapter 11: Biscuit

I didn't laugh.

I looked at Cristina with her mascara running under the pink balloons, and for one second I felt sorry for her.

Then I remembered the spray can.

"He can say whatever he wants," I said. "I'm not his to marry."

I walked out of the ballroom.

Tiziano was waiting under the Drake's awning.

He was leaning on a black Maserati in the no-parking zone, with a doorman pretending not to see it.

He'd watched the live. I could tell by his smile.

"That," he said, "was the hottest thing I've ever seen."

"Move your car. You're blocking a fire lane."

"Did she tell you?"

"She told me you dumped her over the phone like a dentist appointment."

He shrugged. "Her father's going to be mad for a week. Then he'll get over it. Everybody gets over it."

He came off the car and stood in front of me, in the cold, with the doorman watching.

"Listen to me, Meghan. Christmas Eve, Pop names me. Everybody knows it's me. And when it's me, every building on Taylor Street is mine for real."

"I don't care."

"Your mother's building. In your name. Free and clear." He said it soft, like a secret. "Marry me, and she never pays rent again. She never worries about a single inspector again."

"Tiziano." I looked up at him. "Two weeks ago you didn't know my name."

"I know it now."

"You know it because your brother does."

The smile flickered.

"He's not my brother," he said. "He's a stray my father felt sorry for. You've known me since you were six years old. You think one year of text messages beats that?"

"Yes," I said.

I walked around him.

He called after me down the sidewalk.

"Ask him, Meghan. Ask him what he was. Then come find me."
