Chapter 9: Sunday Gravy

The Caravello house in River Forest had a stone wall, an iron gate and a man at the gate who knew Killian's car.

I'd catered a christening here once, at sixteen.

I'd come in through the kitchen.

This time Killian parked in front and walked me up the front steps with his hand on my back.

"Relax," he said.

"I brought a tray of cannoli to a mafia dinner. I'm extremely relaxed."

"He'll eat four."

"He's allowed two. His doctor told my mother."

"Then he'll eat four and blame you."

The dining room was long and dark, with a chandelier and a painting of the Bay of Naples over the sideboard.

Rosario was at the head of the table in his gray cardigan.

Tiziano was on his right.

Cristina was beside Tiziano, in cream cashmere, with her phone face-down by her plate.

Two seats waited on Rosario's left.

Killian pulled out the one closest to his father for me.

Tiziano's mouth went thin.

"Meghan," Rosario said. He didn't get up. He held out his hand, and I put the tray of cannoli in it.

He lifted the foil and looked.

"Eileen's?"

"Mine. Her recipe."

"Hm." He set the tray down by his own elbow, out of everybody else's reach. "Sit."

There was a housekeeper who never spoke and a big bowl of rigatoni with Sunday gravy, meatballs and braciole and sausage, the kind you smell from the street.

The housekeeper filled my plate.

Cristina watched her do it.

"Oh wow," she said. "Go easy on her. She's worked so hard."

Nobody said anything.

"I'm just saying. All that progress." Cristina smiled at me with her whole face. "It's so easy to slip, babe. I'd hate for you to end up back in the flannel."

Tiziano laughed into his wine.

I picked up my fork.

"Cristina," I said. "You've got gravy on your cashmere."

She looked down.

She didn't. But she looked.

"Made you check," I said, and ate a meatball.

Rosario made a sound.
