Chapter 23: Ceremony Night

I hit Broderick Davenant with a wolf's whole weight.

He went over backward onto the stone.

The spike flew out of his hand, rang once on the Ring and spun to a stop.

I stood on his chest with my teeth bared a hand's width from his throat.

He stared up at me.

He had never been afraid of me before, and he was afraid now, with all of it showing in his face.

"Keira," he whispered.

I could smell the silver on his fingers.

I could smell his fear, sour and thin.

I thought of every night I had waited for him outside a door.

I wanted to close my jaw.

I did not.

Behind me, Orson said my name, hoarse and clear, and the wolf in me turned its head.

He was on his knees, one hand pressed to his side, with gray smoke curling between his fingers.

I stepped off Broderick's chest and went to him.

The old elder brought her cane down on the stone so hard it split.

"Foul," she said, and the whole bowl heard her. "Broderick Davenant drew silver in the Ring. The fight is forfeit. His seat is forfeit, by his own hand."

Nobody cheered.

They were looking at Broderick, and what they thought of him was written plainly in the silence.

I let the shift go.

It was easier this time, a long warm unfolding, and I came down on my knees beside Orson in a torn dress with my hair in my face.

"Let me see," I said.

"It's silver."

"I know what it is."

I put both hands over the wound.

I did not know what I was doing.
