Chapter 14: The Mirror
We were back in his room within ten minutes, wet to the skin, with Hugh's lantern bobbing away across the snow.
"He said dawn," I said. "It's two in the morning."
"Then we have four hours."
"Four hours of what?"
Percival shut the door and leaned on it.
His hair was dripping, and his shirt was stuck to him.
He looked at me as though I were the answer to a question he had asked for three hundred years.
"Anything you say," he told me.
There is a tall mirror in his room, between the two windows, in a frame of black wood.
He had never used it for anything but his cravat.
I walked over to it in his big coat and my bare feet.
My hair was a wet black mess.
My cheeks were pink, and my mouth was swollen, and his love bite showed dark below my collarbone.
I looked like a woman who had been well loved, and I had never seen that woman before.
"Come here," I said.
He crossed the room and stopped behind me.
He was a head taller than I was, and in the glass his amber eyes met mine over my hair.
"Take off the coat," I said.
His hands came around my shoulders.
He drew the fur-lined wool down my arms, slowly, and let it drop.
I stood naked in front of the mirror with the lamplight on my skin.
I did not cover myself.
I never do, not with him, and I did not want to.
"Now tell me what you see," I said.
"My lady."
"Be specific."
His hands settled on my waist, big and warm, with his thumbs resting in the soft dip above my hips.
"I see the curve of your shoulder," Percival said.
