Chapter 23: The Second Bite
We did not make it past the door.
He shut it behind us with his shoulder and had me against it before the latch clicked.
His mouth was on mine, and both his hands were on the tiny velvet buttons down my back.
"Maisie pinned this," I gasped.
"Maisie will forgive me."
"She sewed it for the old queen."
"Then the old queen can forgive me too."
He undid them one by one, with a patience that was nearly cruel, and I felt the velvet sag loose off my shoulders.
It slid down my body and puddled around my feet.
I stood there in the lamplight in my stockings and nothing else, and his eyes went over me.
"Bed," I said.
He lifted me.
He carried me across the long stone room.
He laid me down on the dark green coverlet and stood over me, undressing.
He did not do it slowly.
His waistcoat hit the floor, and his shirt, and his boots, and the brass watch went onto the mantel with a click.
I propped myself up on my elbows and watched.
"Come here," I said. "Lie down."
He lay beside me, on his side, with his hand spread flat on my stomach.
His breath was ragged.
"I have not slept in my own bed with you since the night you bit me," Percival said.
"I have a question."
"Ask."
"What do you want? Everything. Whatever you haven't said yet."
He closed his eyes.
I watched the truth come up in him and stand in his throat.
"I want to take your mark," he said.
"And I want you to take mine."
"I want there to be no law, no Council, no oath, no door in the world that could separate us."
"I want to be yours so thoroughly that they will have to write a new word for it."
"What else?"
"I want to take you hard."
His voice dropped.
"I want to let the wolf have you, as far as you will let him, and I want you to tell me when to stop."
