Chapter 13: Night Five
I got back to Dorchester at half past five, and I could not have told you one street I passed.
Cormac was at the stove, making grilled cheese for Maeve.
He had a spatula in one hand and a phone pinned to his shoulder, and he looked completely ordinary.
That was what broke something in me.
He had stood in that ring four nights running, and he could still flip a sandwich.
"Hey," he said, and ended his call. "Mae wants to show you her spelling test."
"Ninety-five," Maeve announced from the table. "I missed 'necessary.'"
"It's a hard word," I said.
My voice came out almost normal.
The door to the back stairs opened, and Gran came up in her slippers.
She was seventy-eight, barely five feet tall, with a face like a closed fist.
She looked at me for a moment.
"Maeve," she said. "Come down and show me the test. I've got the good biscuits."
