Chapter 17: The Brothers' Fight
Abby's POV
Dell found me at the laundry desk at ten to four and held up her phone.
"There's a fight at the Ashworth Athletic Club," she said. "I have it on good authority. The authority is a front desk girl who sells me protein bars."
"What kind of fight?"
"The kind where they rented the ring by the hour and the man at the desk is crying."
I clocked out, which cost me a dollar fifty in lost wages, and added it to the invoice in my head.
The gym was on the third floor of a glass building, and I heard it from the stairwell.
It sounded like furniture being thrown at furniture.
Beckett and Rowan were in the ring in black shorts and red gloves, circling each other, and neither of them was winning.
Beckett was faster.
Rowan was heavier, and exact.
He blocked every punch with a small, dry movement of his forearm.
I could tell it was driving his brother out of his mind.
"Stop being right," Beckett said, and swung.
"I'm not doing it on purpose."
"That's worse!"
I sat on a bench by the ring, and Dell sat next to me with a clipboard she had taken from the front desk.
"What are we billing?" she asked.
"Everything."
Beckett landed a hook on Rowan's ribs, and Rowan grunted and stepped back and hit the speed bag with his shoulder.
The bag tore off its hook and rolled across the mat.
"Speed bag," Dell wrote. "One hundred eighty."
Rowan dropped his guard for a second to look at me.
