Chapter 21: The Night Before
"Come in out of the rain," I said, "and say that again."
He stayed on the step.
Behind me I heard Idris get up from the tub, and the drip of water on the boards.
"Torrance promised my pack its debt gone," the young Alpha said. "A debt like yours, only worse."
"He said I was to petition at the dawn vote, in front of the Moot, and bite over your scar."
"He said his scribe had a reading that made it a finished mark, whether you answered or not."
"I didn't know what it did to anyone else. I swear it on my pack."

"Why come now?" I said.
"Because I watched you put a knife through his hand," he said. "And I thought, she isn't afraid of him. And I was."
Idris came up behind me, in his trousers, with a quilt around his shoulders.
The young Alpha went the colour of paper.
"Alpha Holloway," he said. "I'll take whatever you give me."
