Chapter 17: Come Home, Harlan

I pulled on a coat over nothing much and went down the back stairs barefoot.

I did not wake Torsten.

I did not want a fight at midnight with my body still humming, and I wanted to see Rhett's face without the Alpha standing behind me.

The yard was cold and wet underfoot.

Rhett waited at the edge of the trees with his hands in his jacket pockets.

"Harlan," he said.

"You're supposed to be at the cabin."

"I walked. Is that a crime?" He smiled a little. "You look well. Is he good to you?"

"Go home, Rhett."

"I am home. You're the one who moved." His eyes slid up to my window. "Do you know how long I waited for you to stop crying in the bathroom and let me in?"

It took me a second to understand that he meant it.

He was not acting. He truly thought he had been the patient one.

"You wrote the rule," I said. "You forged my name. You let me sit in that cabin and call myself difficult."

"You were difficult." He said it softly. "You were also mine, and you were good for me, and I would have been good to you if you'd stayed where you were put."

I stared at him.

I waited to feel the old pull, the need to explain myself and apologize.

It did not come.

All I felt was the cold in my bare feet.

"Come home, Harlan," he said, and held out his hand.

I laughed.

It surprised both of us.

"Not if you set the cabin on fire and moved the moon to the porch."

His hand dropped.
