Chapter 4: Which Law

He came back in twenty minutes.

I had cleaned up the broken mug with paper towels from the corner cabinet and was trying to look like a wolf who did this every morning.

Torsten Redmond stopped in the doorway. He had washed his hands and put on a clean shirt, and his eyes were dark green again.

"You cleaned that up," he said.

"I'm sorry about your cup. I just stood there while it broke."

"It was ugly. Cormac gave it to me."

I almost smiled. He saw it, and something in his shoulders eased.

He didn't come closer. He sat down behind the long table, with the whole width of it between us.

"I owe you an apology for walking out. That was rude, and it wasn't your fault." He folded his hands. "From today you stand the lodge gate with two others, days only. You'll report to the gate captain, and you won't need to come into this office again unless you want to."

"Why would I want to?"

"You wouldn't. I'm only saying you can choose."

He spoke slowly and chose each word.

I looked at the silver frame on his desk.

"That's me," I said. "At nineteen. I was visiting my brother."

"Yes."

"I never knew you were there."

"I stayed at the back of the fire." He looked at the photograph, not at me. "Cormac took it. He sent it to me later, and I never gave it back."

My wolf pushed at my ribs, hard.
