Chapter 7: No Debts
The Elder sat down in Rhett's armchair and rested both hands on her walking stick.
"Jodie. Go and wait in the car."
"Grandmother, I'd rather stay."
"I wasn't asking."
Jodie looked at me. I nodded, because I would not make her fight her grandmother in the cabin of the man who had lied to both of us.
She went out. The screen door clapped behind her, and the bracelet went with her, in her coat pocket.
The Elder watched her go. She did not look at the dresser.
Then she turned to me.
"You are the sister of my head of patrols," she said. "You have been in this pack four years, and until today I didn't think you worth a conversation. I find I was wrong."
"You knew about me."
"I know what happens on my lands. Rhett is an ambitious boy. He wants the Chief's seat, and I mean to give it to him, through my granddaughter."
"He's been living with me."
"He has been living with a she-wolf who knew how to be quiet." She tilted her head. "That's a talent. I'd have kept you on, you know, as long as you stayed quiet. A man is allowed a past."
"A past."
"That is what you will be by the moot, if you are sensible."
I thought of Rhett's drawer of cards, and of four years of begging at the kitchen table.
I laughed, and it came out hard.
"You want me to keep quiet so he can court your granddaughter."
"I want a good match for her. You will not interfere." The Elder stood. "A tactical wolf who disrupts a courting faces a hearing and a loss of posting. A wolf without a posting has no den. You have been given an easy assignment at the lodge gate, I see. I would hate to see that taken away."
