Chapter 22: His Terms
Veyra lay in bed three with the evening light on the wall, counting how many breaths she had left.
She had not told anyone the number.
Liriel had said by morning, in the corridor, in a low voice, after the Gate steps.
Veyra had heard it through the door, and she had not been afraid.
She was only tired, and she was warm, because a man had been sitting on the stool beside her for an hour with her hand in both of his.
The core in his chest hummed against her fingertips.
She had stopped trying not to feel it.
"Do you know what I thought about, on the floor of the closet?" she said.
"What?"
"That I'd never get to tell you one true thing."
"You've told me a few since then."
"Not enough."
He turned her hand over and rubbed his thumb across her palm.
Her whole body noticed.
The door opened, and Liriel came in with a flat leather folder and Ruenna at her shoulder.
"I have the page," Liriel said. "The clerk sent it over from the Center. It's the trial contract."
"Is the Registry waiting?" Veyra asked.
"The Registry went home. The inspector said clause nine can sit until morning, and the women who dropped their coats have taken every night shift in the Ward." Liriel almost smiled. "Nobody's waiting. This is yours."
She put the folder on the blanket.
Veyra opened it.
The page was plain, a single sheet with two lines at the bottom for signatures and a paragraph above.
Her hands shook.
She looked at Nils.
"I should give you the other page first," she said.
