Chapter 23: The Open Door

He carried her home from the Ward, up the stairs and through the flat, to the bedroom door she had kept locked for ninety nights.

The bedroom was small and bare, with a narrow bed, a bedpost worn pale and three deep grooves in the doorframe.

Veyra looked at them over his shoulder.

"I'll fix that," she said.

"Leave it."

He set her down on the mattress.

She sat up at once and caught the front of his shirt in both hands, shaking.

"I'm going to be bad at this," she said. "I'm starving, Nils. I could take too much."

"Take it."

"You don't understand what you're saying."

"I know my core." He put his hand over her fist. "I know you. Take what you need, and I'll tell you if it's too much."

Her eyes were wet and amber and wild.

She pulled him down and kissed him.

It was clumsy and desperate, all teeth and breath, and he opened his mouth and let her.

Her tongue found his.

A low sound came out of her throat, and the draw started, wide and soft, a long warm pull that went from his lips to his chest and into her.

His core answered.

It gave, and gave again.

Her gray skin flushed gold, from her mouth first, then her throat.

"Oh," she said against his lips. "Oh, God. It doesn't stop. It just keeps..."

"I'm here."

"I know. I know you are."

She tore his shirt open.

Her palms went flat on his chest, his ribs, his stomach, and she kissed his collarbone, his shoulder, the scar on his arm.

"Three months," she said into his skin. "Three months, outside the door."

"I heard."

"I wanted to open it every night."

"Open it now."

She laughed, wet and broken, and pulled the thin nightgown over her head.

She was slender, with sharp hip bones and small high breasts, and her skin had warmed in patches where her hunger had eased.
