Chapter 24: Three Marks

The smoke was already in the hall when Nils pulled on his trousers.

He opened the bedroom door, the one with the three grooves, and stopped.

Ruenna was at the stove with a spatula in one hand and a blackened pan in the other.

"It's fine," she said. "It's eggs."

"It's charcoal," said Liriel.

She sat at his small table with a notebook open and a pencil behind her ear.

"I'm charting how fast you ruin a breakfast," she added. "You're setting a record."

"I'm trying."

"I know. That's what makes it so hard to watch."

Veyra stood by the window in his borrowed shirt, with a glass of water.

She was pink and clear-eyed and upright, and nobody had told her to stay in bed because nobody could have made her.

She turned when she heard him.

Her face lit.

"You're up," she said.

"I'm up. Is that the kitchen on fire?"

"Only the pan."

"Sit," Ruenna ordered, pointing the spatula at him. "Not there. The good chair. Liriel says you rest."

"I've got to see about the rent."

"I paid it. Term one." She flipped the eggs onto a plate, where they sat in a smoking gray mass. "Two weeks of it, and next month. I'm an A-rank, Halvorsen. I can afford a landlord."

"I was going to..."

"You are going to sit down."

He looked at the three of them.

Veyra had put down her glass.

Liriel had closed her notebook.

All three were watching him, and he realized with a shock that they were waiting for him to obey.

He sat in the good chair.
