Chapter 13: Bulldozers
Jarrett had thumbed his phone on his way out the diner door.
I understood why when we reached Mill Road and saw the flatbed.
It sat crooked at the mouth of the Kerr farm lane, with a yellow bulldozer chained to its back.
The chains were already off.
The dozer rolled down the ramp as I got out of Joanna's truck, and it turned toward the east field.
"Noon," Dale said behind me, stunned. "He said noon."
"He lied," I said.
Joanna was on her phone before I finished the word.
"Trucks," she said into it. "Every one of you. The lane off Mill Road. Nose to tail, right now."
My father didn't wait for any of us.
Bert Kerr was sixty-three years old, and he ran across that stubble field in his good flannel.
The oak stood at the far edge, black against the sky.
My mother's stone sat in its shade.
The dozer was halfway there when my father reached the tree and turned around.
He planted his boots in front of the trunk and spread his arms.
