Chapter 14: The Checks Clear

Forty growers stood in a stubble field, staring at their phones.

Nobody spoke.

A man near the back was already walking toward his truck.

"Hold on," Joanna said.

She did not shout it.

She just climbed onto the dozer's tread so that every one of them could see her.

"Jarrett Pelletier took ten percent of your money for two years," she said. "Now he says the man who stopped him is the liar."

"The bank might freeze it," the man at the back called. "I've got a note due Friday."

"Then nobody moves till we know."

"What do we do?"

She looked down at me.

I had already dialed.

"Madam Chair," I said when she answered.

"I need the county bank open, an armored car and a table on the courthouse steps in one hour."

"Cash?"

"Every dollar on every check I handed out."

There was a short silence on the line.

"That is a great deal of cash on a public street," she said.

"That's the point."

"Done. I'll call the manager myself."

I made one more call as I hung up.

My lawyer froze the joint account my wires had fed, every dollar of it, at once.

By one o'clock a card table stood on the courthouse steps with a white cloth over it.

Two guards from an armored truck flanked it, and the bank manager sat behind a stack of bundled bills in a gray cardigan.

The reporter from Dayton had set her camera on a tripod across the street.

Half the town had come to watch, with their arms crossed.
