Chapter 9: What She Wanted

My lawyer filed the divorce at noon, and by midnight I still hadn't stopped pacing the loft.

Joanna had put my father in her spare room next door and made Dale take the couch.

She had spent the evening feeding both of them soup and not saying a word about the deed.

I heard the stair creak a little after twelve.

I turned from the window and she was standing at the top in a gray T-shirt and bare legs, her braid undone, her hair loose over her shoulders.

She had never looked more like a woman who had made up her mind.

"Your father's asleep," she said.

"Jo."

"Dale's snoring on my couch like a bear in a coat."

"Jo, it's late."

"The papers were filed at noon." She came across the boards in bare feet. "I called your lawyer's office myself to ask."

"You called my lawyer."

"I'm done being tidy, Mason."

She stopped in front of me.

I could feel the heat of her through the cotton.

"I'm thirty-one years old," I said, hoarse. "I'm angry and I'm tired and I don't want to be anyone's mistake."

"I'm twenty-nine," she said. "And I've wanted you since before you married her."

My breath left me.

"Since before..."

"Since the night you drove me home from the county fair and didn't say a word the whole way." She laid her palm flat on my chest. "I've wanted you every year since. I'm not going to want you any slower tonight."

I kissed her.

It was not a careful kiss.

I had her face in both hands and her mouth under mine, and she made a low sound in her throat and dragged me down by my shirt.

She tasted like coffee and rain.

She pulled the shirt over my head, and her palms ran over my chest and my shoulders.

"Your hands," she breathed.

"What about them?"

"Put them on me."

I did.

I slid them under the gray cotton and up her ribs, and she shivered against me.

She was soft and warm and strong, and her hips filled my palms when I gripped them.
