Chapter 6: The Dare

Mason beat me into the house by thirty seconds.

He was standing in the kitchen with the lights off when I came in dripping.

"Who was that?" he said.

"A ride."

"I know whose car it was."

"Then you know it was a ride." I pulled off my wet jacket. "I was walking in a storm, Mason."

"You could have called me."

"You were at a lift."

"I'd have come." He folded his arms. "You got in his car. After everything I told you."

"I didn't tell him where I live. I didn't tell him anything."

That was almost true.

I had told him about Mom.

I decided not to mention it.

Mason stared at me for a long moment, and then something in his shoulders loosened.

"You can't do that again," he said.

"Okay."

"Promise."

"I promise I won't tell him who I am."

It wasn't the promise he'd asked for.

He was too tired to notice.

On Friday, Jess caught me at my locker with a clipboard and a gleam in her eye.

"I have a favor," she said. "It's more of a dare."

"No."

"You haven't heard it."

"I don't need to."

"The paper is doing a series. New faces. First-day stories. I'm interviewing everyone who transferred." She tapped the clipboard. "There are four of you. Guess who's number three."

"I'm number three?"

"Dunleavy is number three. You are number four." She grinned. "I want you to interview him."

"Me? Why?"

"Because he talks to you. Because he won't talk to me. Because every other reporter on staff is afraid he'll bite." She leaned in. "And because you're going to be sitting next to him all semester anyway."
