Chapter 11: I Believe You

Birdie came home to the penthouse on the sixth day, and Imogen did not.

Laurence had told her to work from her office until further notice.

He had said it kindly, in front of the staff, with a reason about the press.

Ben's men were in the lobby downstairs and one was in the hall outside Birdie's door.

At midnight I found Laurence in the kitchen with a kettle and no idea how to use it.

He stood over the stove with the lid off, frowning at a flame.

I took the kettle out of his hands and filled it.

"It needs water first," I said.

"I know that."

"You put it on the burner dry."

*She is standing in my kitchen in my shirt. I gave her my shirt. She is wearing it on purpose or by accident.*

I looked down.

It was one of his old white shirts. The nurse had found it in the laundry for me, because mine were all in a box at Maureen's.

I did not take it off.

"Sit," he said. "Please. I want to ask you something."

I sat at the island.

He did not sit.

He stood across from me with both hands flat on the marble.

"Tell me what happened," he said. "All of it, from the day you left. Not for the paper. Not for a lawyer. Just tell me, and I won't say a word until you're finished."

I looked at him for a long time.

"Why now?"

"Because I never asked," Laurence said. "I told you what had happened. I told you in front of a hundred people. I never once asked."
