Chapter 13: Everybody's Spare Hands
Hallie's clipboard held forty-one tasks, and Tate's name stood beside thirty-eight of them.
I read the list upside down from my side of the folding table.
We sat in the town hall's side room, and nobody had chosen a place for the dinner yet.
Della had saved me the seat next to hers and handed me no jobs at all.
Five neighbors filled the other seats.
Three were Tate's chair lenders: the bridge-game woman, the porch-supper woman, and the casserole woman.
The fourth was the man from the pie-tin gate, and the fifth was the woman with the visiting niece.
The bridge-game woman had given her handbag a chair of its own.
Hallie tapped line one with her pen.
"Tables, tent, heaters, and parking," she read, writing Tate's name after each.
"He did the tent last year," the pie-tin man said happily.
"What's line forty-one?" I asked.
"Keep the rain off the tables," Hallie answered.
"Tate's down for that. He always tells us it will hold."
