Linc took the card out of my hand and read it three times.

"I told him no," he said.

"I heard you."

"I'll handle it."

"How?"

He didn't have an answer, and he didn't pretend to.

That was Rule nine, and he kept it.

I wore my mother's dress.

Navy crepe, long sleeves, a neckline that had made my dad clear his throat when I took it out of her closet at Thanksgiving.

She'd been two sizes smaller than me and four inches shorter.

I let out every seam she'd left room in and set a band of green silk into the waist from the costume shop's scrap bin.

Jess zipped me up in the middle of her dorm room floor, because I wasn't going back to the suite.

"You look like a senator," she said.

"Is that good?"

"A senator who's about to win."

The gala was in the old ballroom under the library.

Chandeliers, white tablecloths, two hundred people in black tie.

The trustees sat at a long table on a low stage.

Marshall Ogden sat in the middle with a gavel he didn't need.
