Chapter 13: What Completion Does

Dorothea left the morning room without another word, and the lawyer went after her.

Calla stayed where she was, behind Yvette's chair, with one hand in her cardigan pocket.

"I recorded all of it," she said. "My phone has been going since four. If either of you needs me, I am in the kitchen being furious at a kettle."

She kissed Yvette's hair, gave her brother a look, and went out.

The door clicked.

Alaric did not move from the doorway.

"Say it," Yvette said. "What happens when you say it."

He crossed the room and sat down in his grandmother's chair, across the table from her, with the old yellow cards between them.

"My grandfather left me a letter," he said. "The lawyer gave it to me on my twenty-fifth birthday."

"Eight years ago."

"I read it once. I did not understand it until you came to my door with your second face."

Yvette waited.

"He was thirty-one when she came. Brown hair, no history, a hospital card with no name." His voice was very even. "She told him she had a task, and that when he said he loved her, she would be gone."

"Gone home."

"That is what she told him." Alaric looked at the card on top. "He said it in this room in June of 1976. He wrote that she was in the middle of a sentence."

Yvette's mouth had gone dry.
