Chapter 15: Day Thirty

Yvette sat on the wet boards of the boathouse with her back against the rowboat and said it out loud.

"Show yourself."

The system did not answer.

It never answered when she asked it for anything that mattered.

"I have a question about the word home," she said. "You have six lives of my silence. Answer it."

"Executor query received."

The voice was flat and pleasant, and she hated it.

"Where is my origin world?"

"Origin world is the point of return upon mission completion."

"That is not an answer."

"It is the approved response."

Yvette pressed her fists against her knees.

"A woman who was the old man's executor said her mission was complete in nineteen seventy-six," she said. "A hospital card says nobody found her. Where did she go?"

There was a pause, the longest she had ever heard from it.

"Records of prior executors are restricted."

"Is that a yes?"

"It is a restriction."

"Then I will ask something you are allowed to say." She was shaking, and she let it show. "What happens to me when he says it?"

"The executor's assignment ends."

"And me?"

"The executor is no longer assigned."

"Where am I, the next minute?"

Another pause.

"The executor is not assigned a next minute."

Yvette closed her eyes.

It was the first true thing the voice had ever said to her.
