Chapter 24: Ask Me Again
On Sunday the dining room at Brookline had a full table for the first time in eleven years.
Yvette counted the chairs twice.
Alaric sat at the head, in shirtsleeves, carving a roast with more care than it needed.
Calla sat across from her with a plate piled high, pink in the face and hungry.
"The doctor says I can have wine," she announced. "One glass. Possibly two."
"The doctor said one," Alaric said.
"The doctor is not here."
"The doctor will be here Tuesday, and I will tell her."
"Traitor."
At the far end, in a chair that had been pulled up a little late, sat Dorothea.
She wore a plain gray dress and no pearls.
She had given her statement on Wednesday, at a table in a police station, with her lawyer beside her and her granddaughter in the corridor, and she had said it plainly with her own mouth.
She had not said much since.
"Yvette," she said now, into a pause. "Might I ask something?"
"Of course."
"Does anyone know her name? The first one."
The table went quiet.
"No," Yvette said. "Nobody has it. I am sorry."
Dorothea nodded slowly.
She looked at the empty place at her own right hand, where the housekeeper had set a cup of tea at her request, and had not been asked to take it away.
"Then I will call her my husband's friend," she said, "until someone tells me better."
"That is a good name," Calla said, and reached across the cloth to squeeze her grandmother's hand.
Dorothea let her.
She did not say anything else, but her shoulders came down.
