Chapter 5: Terms

Dorothea turned on the study light and closed the door behind her.

Yvette took her hand off the envelope.

"I was looking for aspirin," she said.

"In a locked drawer." Dorothea's voice was kind. "Sit down before you fall down, dear."

Yvette sat in the leather chair because her knees chose it for her.

The old woman crossed the room and closed the drawer with two fingers. The lock clicked on its own.

"My grandson keeps these every time he hires a girl he has helped," Dorothea said. "Pictures, notes. He thinks I do not know. It is the only sentimental habit he has."

"Seven girls?"

"Seven that I have counted." Dorothea smiled slightly. "He is a generous man and a private one. I would not ask him about it."

Yvette watched her face and found nothing there but patience.

"I will not tell Alaric you were here," Dorothea said. "And you need not tell him I was. We shall call it a draft in the hall."

"Thank you."

"Go to bed, Yvette."

She went.

At the top of the stairs she heard the study door close softly, and then a drawer open and shut again.

She did not think about it.

She would think about it later.

Yvette found Alaric in the library the next night at midnight.

He sat alone at the card table with a glass of whisky and a deck of cards, laying out solitaire he was not playing.

"You are up," he said.

"So are you."
