Chapter 6: The Dinner

On Friday night Dorothea gave a dinner for the foundation board, and Yvette was seated at the far end of the table.

There were fourteen chairs. Eleven were taken by donors in dark suits and pearls, and Calla had the chair beside her grandmother.

Alaric sat at the head.

He had kept the second of her terms and come to dinner, and he had not looked down the table once.

Yvette cut her lamb into very small pieces.

The woman on her right wore sapphires and had been talking about herself for twenty minutes.

"And you work for the family?" the woman asked at last.

"I keep Calla company, yes."

"How sweet." The woman patted her own throat. "Dorothea is always collecting strays. I suppose it is good for the girls, some of them. A roof, three meals."

Two donors across the table stopped chewing.

Yvette laid down her fork.

"It is a good roof," she said. "I have seen the inside of worse."

"Have you?"

"A bridge, once." Yvette smiled. "The view was nicer, and nobody asked me what my father did."

The man opposite choked on his wine.

Calla put her napkin over her mouth, and her shoulders began to shake.

The woman in sapphires blinked. "I beg your pardon?"

"I said I was glad you asked about the lamb," Yvette said pleasantly. "It is excellent. I would ask the cook about the sauce."
