Chapter 9: Seven
He was waiting for her at the boathouse at the bottom of the garden.
It was raining hard, and the lamp inside the shed made a yellow square on the wet grass.
Yvette walked down to it in Calla's borrowed coat and was soaked before she reached the door.
Alaric stood inside beside a covered rowboat, with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.
"You said tonight," she said.
"I did."
"Then tell me. How do you know the number?"
He was quiet for a long moment.
"Because I remember," he said. "All of them. Every face."
"I know you do."
"No. You know I recognize you." He turned his head. "I remember the first one. The bridge. You wore a green scarf, and you told me you were going to finish me in a month."
Yvette's throat tightened.
"You were wrong about the month."
"I was wrong about a great deal."
"You never said so."
"What?"
"Seven times." Her voice shook, and she let it. "You asked me to die seven times, and in seven lives you never once said you were sorry."
His face did not move.
"I stood in your doorway after the first one," she said. "I waited an hour. You told me the car was ready."
"I know."
"That is all you have?"
"Calla had a week. I had nothing else to offer." His jaw worked. "And if I said I was sorry, I would have been lying. I would have asked again."
"Then you are a monster."
"Yes."
He said it flatly, as a fact, and it was worse than if he had argued.
Yvette shoved him in the chest with both hands.
He went back a step and let her.
She shoved him again, and he caught her wrists.
They were both breathing hard.
