Chapter 14: Four Blocks

We anchored the first night in a cove on North Haven.

Brynn had swallowed that tablet at noon, and by dark she was asleep in the forward berth without a care.

I lay awake and counted what it proved, which was nothing yet.

Tobias waited for the morning to speak.

He did it after breakfast, with the camera's red light on and Brynn rinsing mugs in the galley.

"I'd like to say something to everyone watching," he said.

He sat forward on the bench with his hands clasped between his knees.

"For four years my wife and I tried to have a baby. I went to every appointment. I gave up coffee. I did everything they asked."

Finnegan's hand stilled on the tiller.

"And last year I learned she had been taking birth control the whole time," Tobias said. "Four years you let me hope, Samantha. I'm saying it here because you won't say anything to me alone."

The galley went quiet.

Brynn stood in the hatch with a mug in her hand and her eyes full.

She said nothing, and it landed better than words.

I looked at the tablet on its clip.

The comments were rolling past too fast to read.

I could have told them everything right then.

But Joanna's friend at the lab had told us the printout was only a printout.

It needed her director's signed letter, and the letter would come in two days.

I wanted it in my hand when I said it.

"Tobias," I said. "Did you ever see the pack?"
