Chapter 19: Back at Rockport
There were four hundred people on the Rockport dock when we came in.
I noticed the phones before I saw the faces.
Finnegan brought the Marigold alongside without a bump.
I stepped onto the planks with the bow line in my hand and made it fast myself.
My father had taught me that knot.
The crowd had gone quiet in a way I could feel on my skin.
At the front stood a woman in a grey raincoat with her arms crossed.
Next to her was a heavy man in a navy blazer with the foundation's pin on the lapel.
Behind them, in scrubs with a coat thrown over, stood my sister, holding a cardboard box against her hip.
Joanna came through the people and put both arms around me, box and all.
"I drove all night," she said into my shoulder. "I've got the samples, the printout, and a cooler of ginger ale. You look terrible. You look wonderful."
She let go and turned on Finnegan.
"You. Skipper. Did you feed her?"
"Shortbread," he said gravely. "Twice."
"Good."
Then the woman in the grey raincoat stepped forward, and the dock went quiet again.
"Brynn," she said.
Brynn had come up behind me on the planks.
Her hair was in a knot, her eyes were swollen, and she held her weekender against her chest.
"I can explain," she said.
"I own four pharmacies," the woman said. "I opened the first one thirty years ago with a loan from my brother. I watched you this morning in my office, on the stream, with my staff."
