Chapter 7: The Parade
By December the whole province had read clause seven.
The women at the Co-op texted me every hour.
Most of them wrote that he was lucky I hadn't brained him, and one sent a recipe for rhubarb wine with orders to drink it.
Photographers had stood outside the yellow house since the story ran.
So on the first Saturday of December I did what nobody expects of a person hunted by cameras.
I put a pillowcase over my head.
It was the Mummers Parade, and Duckworth Street was packed from the harbour to the Anglican cathedral with two thousand people in disguise.
My cousin had brought me a costume in a garbage bag.
It held a flowered pillowcase with eye holes, a lace curtain for my shoulders, a man's red wool jumper to stuff with a cushion, and rubber boots.
I stood among forty strangers in lace and rubber, and not one of them could tell who I was.
Nan Winnie sat on a folding chair in a shop doorway on the corner, wrapped in two blankets.
